La curva de popularidad del neuromarketing se empieza a elevar con el estudio What can advertisers learn from neuroscience? Potenciado por apoyo de referentes del marketing y las ventas. Con ello empieza una nueva etapa de debates si esto realmente es efectivo, pero por sobre todo, si es ético o no.
Hablemos primero de la efectividad de los procesos de neuromarketing, de sus herramientas a la hora de captar información. Vamos uno por uno y veamos juntos si esto parece algo lógico, útil y real para aplicarlos en marketing.
La primera es la Electroencefalografía, una técnica por la cual empezamos a monitorear las ondas cerebrales mediante sensores. Se coloca un dispositivo con sensores en la cabeza de una personas y con ello vamos viendo por medio de ondas las reacciones a tal o cual evento. El escenario se ve más o menos así:
Quiero que pensemos un poco como marketer. Esto no es una forma natural en el que encontramos a las personas frente a cualquier producto. No se trata de una situación real. Mostrar una gaseosa en estas circunstancias no va a ser nunca similar a una de supermercado o donde una persona no sea consciente de que tiene sensores en la cabeza.
Por otro lado, los resultados de un electroencefalograma son conjeturas que se toman después de analizar las muestras. O sea, que la información que arroja puede ser que la onda alfa, beta o teta del cerebro sufrieron picos altos o bajos cuando pasó algo, pero no podemos saber qué realmente pasó por la baja resolución de la técnica. Es acá donde entran las conjeturas, pero estas no tienen una precisión alta.
La segunda técnica es la Resonancia Magnética, que tiene una resolución excelente. Pero analicemos el contexto, seamos de vuelta sinceros si estando en un lugar así podemos aplicar a escenarios del marketing.
Ese no es un contexto ideal, hay que decirlo. No estamos hablando de un contexto ideal de compra. No es un escenario ideal de visualización de un comercial de TV. Estamos ante una técnica genial en materia de resolución, pero el contexto no es para nada abrazador. Estamos ante una técnica muy mala a la hora de usarla en marketing.
La tercera técnica es la Magnetoencefalografía, una técnica menos invasiva que la anterior. Lo que se hace es medir el campo magnético del cerebro para tratar de interpretar las reacciones. Pero con menor resolución y de vuelta veamos el contexto en el que se desarrolla el estudio.
No, definitivamente no se trata de un contexto idóneo. Definitivamente no es lo mismo estar realizando una actividad con el casco que con él. En un estado de laboratorio, para otros fines que no sean de marketing puede ser útil.
Acá es bueno aclarar de qué hablamos cuando decimos resolución. Primero que la reacción es muy variable si hablamos de un ser humano, uno puede cambiar mucho de forma de pensar o reaccionar ante una situación. Recordemos que dos de los métodos se basan en conjeturas y en muchos casos una persona solo vale para una muestra. Estamos hablando de muestras muy variables, tanto como la forma de pensar de una persona.
Pero también hay técnicas menos invasivas, más flexibles y de aplicación más práctica. Esto es así con la metodología Steady State Topography que se hizo popular en el mundo tecnológico por lo que hizo Twitter tras el rediseño de su plataforma. Se descubrió con esto que Twitter aumenta un 27 % de relevancia personal frente a otros sitios, mientras que el uso constante eleva esa sensación un 51 %.
¿Qué pasa en este caso? ¿Sirven o no? La clave aparte de la calidad de resolución, es la aplicación del método científico, lastimosamente vamos a tener que recurrir a algo tan básico como eso. Muchas de las empresas que dicen hacer o entender de neuromarketing se basan en algún estudio realizado en situaciones que vimos arriba y que le llaman controlado, es un estudio adverso al método científico. No es lo mismo un contexto de Resonancia Magnética que en una tienda.
Lo que arrojan los estudios controlados aplicados al marketing, en su mayoría, son sesgos de confirmación, donde el que realiza dice que al mostrar el objeto azul las ondas teta saltaron, mientras que al objeto rojo la reacción de las ondas teta fueron nulas, entonces usamos el azul. Eso es sesgo de confirmación, porque en realidad no sabe si fue el color o un evento muy particular.
Si hay método científico de por medio y todo lo que esto representa, más, una aplicación que pueda congeniar con el marketing, estamos hablando de algo de utilidad para la disciplina. Pero incluso si cumple con eso, pueden haber un método más sencillo y barato, que den el mismo resultado sin tanto show de por medio como vamos a ver en un ejemplo más adelante.
Pero antes de ver ejemplos, veamos el estudio que impulsó al neuromarketing:What can advertisers learn from neuroscience?. Este estudio habla de los anuncios afectivos y cognitivos. Los afectivos son los que utilizan el drama, la comedia, etc. y los segundos los datos, estadísticas, etc.
Los anuncios afectivos afectan más partes como el cortex orbitolfrontal, tallo cerebral y la amígdala. Los anuncios cognitivos tiene efectos en cortex pariental posterior, superior prefrontal. Las decisiones de compra las tomamos más de forma emocional y de memoria gracias a los anuncios afectivos, pero los cognitivos nos ayudan a justificar la compra en la post-venta.
Solo eso es lo que arrojó este estudio que hizo potenciar investigaciones y en muchos casos fomentar la estafa en el mundo del marketing, ya que de repente parecía que todo lo que tenía “neuro“ delante era lo correcto. Al final la neurología fue la más afectada.
El ejemplo de la Universidad Técnica de California, nos demostró que muchas veces uno puede hacer las cosas más sencillas obteniendo el mismo resultado que una investigación con todo el show del neuromarketing. Tras escanear el striatum de un grupo de personas frente a la decisión de si la persona que aparece en una foto era linda o no, se obtuvo el mismo resultado frente a la decisión de solo ponerle puntaje a las mismas fotos. O sea, todo el show de los escaner es una forma de solo encarecer y facturar más por el hecho de decir que hacen “neurocosas“.
Lo que se necesita es vender
Hay que dejar claro que cuando uno hace marketing tiene el objetivo de vender. Para vender no se necesita de neuromarketing, se necesita muchas veces de pautas, mail, etc. Así de simple.
En este momento entramos en un tema más fuerte y es el tema ético. Supongamos que el neuromarketing es efectivo y todo lo expuesto anteriormente pasa tu filtro y decides que crees en el neuromarketing. Empecemos a cuestionarlo con la siguiente preguntas ¿Te gustaría que usen trucos neurológicos para que te vendan cosas? ¿Te sentirías cómodo si manipulan tu cabeza con trucos para venderte lo que sea? Mi respuesta es no.
Te lo planteo de esta manera ahora ¿Te gustaría comprar cosas que agreguen valor a tu vida o solucionen un problema? Mi respuesta es si. La finalidad de cualquier marca que brinde un servicio o tenga un producto siempre debería de ser agregar valor, no intentar hackearte la mente para que compres algo.
Si estamos forzando a que nos compren con técnicas dice de nosotros que no estamos poniendo foco a lo más importante, generar valor para cambiar la vida de las personas con nuestro servicio o producto. Dejemos de lado las NeuroBullshit y centrémonos en crear valor.
